Vindicated Vintage

There’s something about “vintage” clothing that is timeless. Oh, How I loathe when I ask someone “Where did you buy that piece?” And they simply reply, “Oh this? Oh it’s vintage.” Sometimes, I wish I had a time traveling machine so I can go back and buy a piece. Vintage clothing is rare pieces in one’s wardrobe that you treat like “fine china”. You only take it out when you trying to impress your guest.     Kansas City is not known for its “vintage” attire. We aren’t like the streets of New York or California where it’s more common. So in my quest to add those rare and unique pieces to my wardrobe, I did the only thing a modern busy mom would do. “Google” Yes, that’s right… I goggled and searched the cyberspace for store’s who sold vintage clothing that would conquer my quest to find “one of a kind” vintage pieces. To my surprise, my search at first valiant seemed to be going towards hopelessness. That is when I met “Donna”; well by met I mean found her site: P Donna’s Dress shop planted in the heart of midtown KC was so authentic. So I called the store and arranged to meet up with Donna herself and asked if I could blog about her store. She politely answered, “Yes”. And we set up a time to meet. Fast-forward, all day at work I thought… Today’s the day that I get to experience true vintage shopping. I could hardly contain myself. Upon entering the shop, I noticed the window display had old time writing and two words that just made me smile. Those words were “vintage” and “new“. I quickly entered and met Donna (the shop owner). She was dressed from head to toe in a 1940’s-1950’s style, her hair was up in a beehive hair-do and she had flawless skin and a pop of cherry red lipstick. She wore a pair of black cat eye glasses and an adorable step ford wives’ dress.   The shop had such a happy vibe, which made me want to shout out the Mary Tyler Moore’s show theme song, “Were going to make it after all!” But not being one to embarrass myself I did no such thing. Donna’s selection was AAA—mazing! She has everything from wing-tip shoes, beautiful jewelry, and one of a kind to modern inspired vintage clothing as well. Everything I picked up whispered to me, “Take me home, wouldn’t I look good on you?”  It was like I was in a Pier One commercial, but only this was a clothing store. The price points were dead on for today’s economy, nothing was really over $100. And for those few items that were over $100, well worth the price especially if you desire one of a kind items to wear to an event. The best thing about Donna’s Dress Shop is that she does not *mass* purchase. So can securely go to an event or out knowing “no” one will have your outfit. My recommendation is to stop by her store,  but if you live out-of-town. You can check out her Facebook page below as they post new items 4 times a day and they will ship it to you as well. Below you will find an interview and clothing from the store, Go in and get inspired! Plus, Donna’s Dress Shop is having a  Memorial Day Sale this coming weekend, so if you are like me looking to embark on adding vintage pieces to your closet this would be the time to shop. What inspired you to open a “Dress Shop” store?

I’ve always loved vintage. I grew up in a household full of antiques. Even my baby carriage and high chair was from the Victorian era. Since the time I could walk, my dad took me every flea market an antique shop this side of the Mississippi. Since the age of five, I always wanted to own my own store. It wasn’t until a bit later that I put the two together.

When was Donna’s Dress Shop established?

We’re having our fifth birthday this fall!

Describe “Donna’s” sense of style?

We carry both new and vintage clothing. All of our new clothing and accessories are steeped in vintage style. So whether it’s a ruffle, cut, print, or pleat detail, all our new pieces have an element of vintage to them. If you look at the runways today, there are echoes of vintage in nearly every piece (some more obvious than others). They all have to start somewhere! We carry very wearable vintage, which means every piece is in pristine condition and cleaned before it enters the store. We believe that vintage and vintage styles can (and should!) be worn every day, and is fun to mix into any wardrobe to create unique looks.

Tell us about any upcoming sales and/or events the shop is having?

We are currently in the throes of Nautical Week. We love any excuse for a theme, and since its National Safe Boating Week, hey! We’re going nautical! So every day this week we have been putting out new and vintage nautical themed goodies: sailor stripes, vintage swimwear (oh the 50s swimsuits are glorious!), navy blues, vintage anchor necklaces . . .

Memorial Weekend we are having a big store-wide sale. It will be Saturday (11-7), Sunday (12-5) and Monday (11-7). Everything in the store will be 20% off, including all sale items. We only have a sale once in a blue moon so it’s an event not to be missed!

39th Street 3rd Fridays are monthly events that we take part in. All the shops and restaurants along 39th Street (from State Line to Southwest Traffic way) stay open late with local art, live music, and specials. Every month we debut new collections and create fun themes and events for 3rd Friday. In June, we are celebrating with a Picnic Party. Expect lots of gingham, vintage lunch boxes, food-themed jewelry, and vintage dishes and linens. We’re decorating the shop like a park, full of AstroTurf and picnic settings. It will be a fun event!

Anything else you want our readers to know?

We love unique pieces! So all our vintage is one of a kind. In new clothing, we just have a limited quantity, just one or two of each size to keep our pieces special. We don’t want to see everyone wearing the same thing, and you don’t want to see anyone else wearing your dress! That means that if you see a piece you want, you may not get another chance at it, as our inventory moves pretty quickly. It also means we get new shipments in daily, and are putting out new and vintage clothing just about every day!
