Weekend Wrap-up

This weekend was one of the best I’ve ever had. My girls and I began the weekend with a trip to City Market, which is Kansas City’s local farmers market. I remember taking trips to the farmer’s market with my father on Saturday mornings. We would buy local produce than stop by Planters Seed Company, Planter’s not only sells seeds but they also sell some of the best seasoning combinations. I’ve bought combinations such as roasted red pepper & garlic and gourmet garlic seasoning.

The girls and I left the farmers market in search of breakfast. I decided to try a new breakfast spot as recommended by a friend. Happy Gillis Hangout is located a short driving distance from the City Market. When I arrived, I kept thinking this place looks familiar. I later learned the restaurant was featured on Drive-ins, Diners, and Dives. I ordered the Pig & Bean which consisted of stewed black beans, chipotle braised pork, soft egg, San Antonio’s tortilla, radish, cilantro and chive. The Pig and Bean was quite different, it was stew/soup. A stewop (stew/soup) for breakfast, this goes against all food rules I know. The stew was refreshingly different. I ordered the Gillis Breakfast sandwich for the girls which consisted of (Scrambled Egg, Bacon, and Cheddar) on Toast along with a side of fruit.  As we waited for our food girls and I practiced our colorful artistic skills. I’ll return to try their dangerously delicious biscuits and gravy.

I wanted to expose my girls to Science and Technology, so after enjoying our breakfast we made our way to Union Station for the Maker Faire. The girls were so excited to see how things were made; they touched and learned about robots, apps, and computer science. While there we ran into Bat Woman, I say that because she was a little too old to be bat girl. After we traveled throughout the Makers Faire, we made our way to Science City and then on to the Made in KC room. Our Sassy Pantry was serving up their delicious Macaroni and Cheese topped with their addictive Bacon Jam. (feel free to send me some anytime).

Afterwards, we made a trip to see both sets of grandparents. The girls, my father and I went to out to eat to dinner (post soon). I discovered that I can’t take my father anywhere without him knowing someone or receiving an open invitation to return. My father is just that type of guy that has an infectious and likeable personality. On the car ride home, the girls were sound asleep in the backseat. At that moment, I felt a since of accomplishment as my Operation 9:00pm bedtime was met. Once the girls were in their beds, I decided to eat my favorite Hagen-Das Ice cream bar and read a magazine. Well, the girls were not the only ones who were tired. I only turned four pages and fell asleep. Moms have to sleep too.
