Fall into Comfort Food Guide – Anna’s Oven

Fall is here! It’s the season when you sip on pumpkin lattes, enjoy a hayride and eat comfort food. What is comfort food? It’s the type of meal that hugs you like a welcoming embrace from a loved one. The food brings you joy, gives you peace, and naturally warms your soul – Yes that is comfort food! I wanted to share, where you can receive the best comfort food in Kansas City. I created a “Fall into Comfort Guide” to help you navigate the city.

Kansas City has a great selection of James Beard Award-winning restaurants to select from, but don’t leave out the small scale restaurants as well. You know the kind of restaurants that you’ve driven past, and you’ll miss the name of it if you blink. See my dear; those restaurants are truly some of the hidden gems in your city. They are the mom & pop restaurants, dives, diners, and eateries with the best food.

First up, I crowdsourced ideas on where I should start. I was quite surprised to discover restaurants I’ve never heard of. Each person recommended their favorite Fall food and explained why I needed to try it. I was salivating after reading each comment. I decided to cut it down to a selected few because…

Fall and I have a love/hate relationship. I love this time of the year – because of all the food, but when Summer shopping comes around again, I despise Fall because I can’t fit my clothes.

First up is Anna’s Oven!

Anna’s Oven is located in the 39th Street District; this area hosts a plethora of unique eateries, boutiques and more. You can truly.. eat, shop, and play there. Anna’s Oven exudes a comfy homestyle feel almost like you are walking into a friends house. You instantly feel comfortable, want to take your coat and shoes off, then sit at the table as you wait for your food.

I ordered the meatloaf as recommended… Let me inform you; I am a huge meatloaf fan. And if your meatloaf is not right – Oh, I’m going to tell you the truth on how bad it is. Luckily Anna’s Oven knows how to prepare a mean meatloaf. I had to contain myself with each bite as I wanted to break out into the “happy” food dance. Don’t let me get started on the homemade mash potatoes and gravy…Okay, see you got me started.

The mash potatoes are some of the best spuds I’ve ever had. Trust me when I say everyone cannot cook mash potatoes, but these were so good. They had the perfect consistency of whipped texture while still leaving a few lumps. I had to remind myself I was not at home as I got down to the last bite. The homemade gravy was divine. I thought it was an unusual combination of zucchini to pair with the meal, but hey – it worked.

I could not leave without sampling their dessert – I opted to try the Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding, which came with an incredible sauce I believed it’s a buttery caramel sauce. Stop the presses! As you have been warned – I repeat.. DO NOT EAT THIS ALONE! Because you inhale it without blinking an eye, Yes it’s that good. I shared (okay I allowed) my daughters to enjoy it with me. But trust me I was ready to order another one to eat by myself.

I am not a gravy person, however, your picture is very tempting. I love comfort food and miss it since I have no idea how to cook any of it.

Fall Into Comfort… that is such a great idea. Make it easy for us to find places with food for fall that is nostalgic, elevates stress and reminds of simpler times.

I love comfort food which is why I use my Crock Pot so often. KC has some great places to eat and I am glad you are sharing them as it gives me ideas for my own recipes.
