Cirque du Soleil “OVO” Review

How it all began – the history of the Cirque du Soleil

“People might think that we set out to reinvent the circus, and then just did it. But things did not happen that way. We were a bunch of crazy people who wanted to do things, and little by little we came to a vision of what the modern circus could be.” -René Dupéré, music composer for 10 Cirque du Soleil shows

The turning point
“Cirque du Soleil visited the US for the first time in 1987. We Reinvent the Circus wowed Los Angeles Festival audiences and media alike with its unique combination of set design, theater-in-the-round, and audience involvement – both physically and imaginatively – and marked the refinement of the creative process that still drives the creation of every new Cirque du Soleil show. It not only played to astonished sell-out crowds in San Diego and Santa Monica, but also spearheaded Cirque du Soleil’s initial 1990 foray into Europe with performances in London and Paris.” – Cirque du Soleil Website

Cirque du Soleil has wowed audiences for over forty years now with several long-standing acts including Las Vegas and much more traveling around the world. I was excited when given the opportunity to attend their newest show “OVO” in my hometown of Kansas City. “OVO” which is a Portuguese for “egg,” is set in a beautiful Brazilian rain forest filled with insects. Ants, fleas, a beautiful butterfly, spiders, along with crazy talented crickets were also found in the show.

The show started off with the ants discovering and doing what most mom tells you not to do – play with your food. The ant’s fancy footwear was so spot on that I could not believe my eyes, from bouncing delicious pieces of kiwi and sweet baby corn on the cob via their feet all in perfect synch rhythm.

The contorison silky spider act will make you wish you were double jointed down to your pinky toes. This group of flexible spiders made moves so smooth; you’ll probably be tempted to try these moves at home. But be sure you have the 9-1-1 on speed dial in case you break something.

The slack wire scene literally made me gasp the whole time I watched. Just imagine pedaling on a high wire with your bare hands – I tell you that it can be done and when done it’s truly amazing. But the icing on the shows cake was the wall act. This act featured dozens of insects scaling, jumping, and walking straight up a vertical wall. I hate to say it, but I haven’t seen moves this captivating since MJ (the original smooth criminal) was alive. I would be satisfied watching this act all by itself, but the scenes leading up to the finale made the show an absolute hit as well!

If you are on the fence on making a decision to see the show, I beg you to act fast. This show has been on my personal bucket list, and I finally scratched it off. You will feel like a kid again while watching the show with eyes of wonder and real enchantment. If you have little one’s don’t fret, they will enjoy the show as well. I took both of my little one’s ages (ten and seven) and the show captured their attention the whole time. Please believe me when I say, “Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is a show you don’t want to miss.”

Top 3 reason to see Cirque du Soleil OVO

1) This performance is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. I call it an experience because it truly is. Unlike the circus or a concert Cirque has encompassed the core functions of both to keep you entertained and excited throughout the performance.

2) The performance is for everyone. I was unsure if my children would enjoy the show, but it kept them intrigued for the whole performance. My oldest child wanted to come back from the intermission early so she wouldn’t miss a thing.

3. After experiencing the performance, you’ll start making plans to attend the next one.

Act fast! The show is only playing until New Years Day. I’m sharing with you a special to receive $10 your purchase – here. I hope you find as much joy with the family watching the show as I did.
(disclosure: My family and I were invited free of charge in exchange for a sponsored post. Please note: All opinions express here are strictly my own).

Their shows are the absolute best. I can’t wait to take my kids so they can experience one live for themselves.
